AUTAIA

Autaia first developed in 2021 with support from Auckland Live is a creative platform for schools, empowering rangatahi through Haka Theatre. Rooted in Te Ao Māori, it fosters creativity, leadership, and pride. Under the guidance of experienced practitioners, schools create impactful 10-minute performances, culminating in a powerful evening at Te Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre.

Taurite

Taurite, first developed in 2020 with support from Auckland Live as part of the Auckland Fringe Festival, embodies the balance between opposing forces. Refined further in 2021 at the Great Town Hall, Taurite had its world premiere at Q Theatre in 2022, followed by a Tai Tokerau tour in 2023. The production is a stunning blend of haka movement and traditional Māori practices, making it a celebrated work of art in the Haka Theatre space.

Te MANAWA

In 2017, Hawaiki TŪ premiered its first full-length Haka Theatre production, Te Manawa, at the ASB Waterfront Theatre.

A groundbreaking haka musical, Te Manawa explored the heartbeat of humanity, weaving together themes of identity, connection, and resilience.

Blending traditional Māori practices with innovative storytelling and movement, the production set a new standard for Haka Theatre, captivating audiences with its power, authenticity, and cultural depth. Te Manawa established Hawaiki TŪ as a trailblazer in Māori performing arts, cementing its reputation for delivering transformative and impactful works on the stage.

Beyond full-length productions, Hawaiki TŪ crafts powerful performance installations that immerse audiences in the beauty of Māori performing arts. Featured at festivals and events, these dynamic works highlight the versatility of Haka Theatre, forging deep connections both locally and globally including some of the following.

I AM - Aotearoa Music Awards

In May 2024, Hawaiki TŪ joined Stan Walker for his powerful performance of I AM at the Aotearoa Music Awards, where he received the prestigious Te Manu Mātārae award.

FestPAC 2024 – Hawai’i

Hawaiki TŪ was honoured to be part of the 2024 delegation for the Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC), the world’s largest celebration of Indigenous Pacific Arts. A team of three, including Artistic Director, Kura Te Ua, delivered multiple performances across Hawai’i from June 6–16, 2024.

World Choir Games – Opening Ceremony

For the first time, the World Choir Games, the largest choral competition and festival in the world, came to Aotearoa in 2024. Kura Te Ua co-choreographed and co-directed a breathtaking opening ceremony which included Hawaiki TŪ kaihaka.

Whakarongo Rā – Te Rawhitiroa Bosch

Premiering in September 2024, Whakarongo Rā was the result of a long creative journey. Kura Te Ua and Hawaiki TŪ kaihaka collaborated with Te Rawhitiroa Bosch to bring this powerful work to life.

Ka Tohe Au – A Niu Dawn Festival

In November 2024, in response to the kotahitanga in Aotearoa and Treaty Principles Bill, Ka Tohe Au emerged as an expression of resilience and defiance. Created from loss and struggle, this 30-minute piece, performed as part of the Black Grace Guerrilla Collective at A Niu Dawn Festival, featured Hawaiki TŪ alongside AUTAIA tauira, standing together in powerful storytelling.
